So, among all the adverts for ‘new car’ deals, how do I know whether my car is a legitmate pre reg’, a logbook-retained pre’ reg’, or a spurious import?
It’s actually pretty simple. Don’t just accept advertisement or website wording at face value - most are written to imply something - but cleverly avoid actually stating the shortfalls. You need to actually SPEAK to the business and ask some questions to clarify their wording and sale conditions:
The 4 things you need to ask are:
1) Is this a UK specification car supplied by a normal UK franchised main dealer with full 3yr UK warranty from the day the car is put into my name?
2) Will I be the first and only registered owner on the logbook (V5 document)?
3) Do I get the logbook put in my name straight away?
4) Who do I hand my deposit and final balance payment to?.. a main franchised dealer..or someone else?
If an online seller doesn’t shout from the rooftops all over their website that you’ll be first & only registered owner, don’t assume you will be, even if you spot phrases such as ‘brand new’, UK registered’, ‘new cars’. Many spurious offerings will parade pre-registered deals under a very grey blanket and still call them ‘new’ as they carry only delivery mileage, but they won’t be clear about the conditions of sale.
If you dig very deep on some websites (and some keep their Terms very well hidden!) you’ll come across phrases such as ‘some of our cars may be pre registered’, ‘some prices may relate to vehicles pre-registered for your convenience’ etc (how is you being 2nd owner rather than 1st owner convenient?!)
On some Terms or FAQ (frequently asked questions) pages, the question of ‘Will I be first registered owner’ isn’t even covered, lots of other things are but that key question (and the answer to it) is not present. By simply avoiding raising ownership status in an ad’ or on a website, the implication to the customer can be extremely misleading.
Also remember, a car’s warranty starts ticking from the day it was first registered, so if you buy the car a few months after it was originally registered, despite it only having delivery mileage...you’ll have lost that length of time on its warranty - so factor that into your calculations of whether it is still a ‘bargain’
